Went to the ballet two days ago to attend the extraordinary performance of the Cape Town Ballet Company perform The Nutcracker.
Music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky this Classical Ballet premiered on 18 December 1892 at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Set on Christmas Eve at the foot of a Christmas tree in a child’s imagination featuring a Nutcracker doll this romanticised ballet plot is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s 1844 short story that illuminates our hearts with every costume, every pirouette and every character.
Sometimes I want to be less of an adult and be more like a child.
The ballet choreographer was Marius Petipa, with whom Tchaikovsky had worked with before on The Sleeping Beauty.
From the Sugar Plumb Fairy to the King Mouse to the scintillating costumes in dreamy sequins to the exquisite setting with stars and snowflakes I was transported to a World of beauty and wonder.
I almost expected to step outside into the thick white snow of St.Petersburg wrapped in a white Winter long coat with fluffy collars and white leather gloves.
The World needs the imagination of a child
The two tinny angels, that were not more than four or five years old, popping out of a Faberge egg with their golden wings and pointing their little toes were totally thrilling.
It is almost Christmas.
Illustrations like these make us smile and feel that beautiful tug in our hearts because we still remember how exciting it was to try and guess what our present was.
Do that this year … unwrap your present slowly and guess what it is before you open it.

It is at Christmas that I take the time to acknowledge every human being past and present that made my life journey so special.
I too will sit at the foot of a Christmas tree and remember the many times that I sat with my sister, herself a ballet dancer and we talked until almost morning from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day.
My son Paul still talks about those dreamy Christmas evenings.
Our children are our best gift.
All I want for Christmas is you.
