PARADISE LOST

Mozambique

24 April 1974 The Carnations Revolution in Portugal

Running bare feet in the sand was my favourite pastime as I romanced the Indian Ocean with gay abandonment.

Liberty was the slogan that we heard coming from Portugal, our Motherland.

As a young girl full of dreams freedom and equality sounded like the right words.

Peace and Love were the symbols painted on our hearts.

We were the generation that witnessed how a Province of Portugal called Mozambique became a Country ruled by the same people that our brave Portuguese men died for.

I lost my favourite cousin.

Twenty two years old, he was. Beautiful and innocent.

Paradise Lost

The bullets flew past my ears in the city centre and on that day I knew there and then that my paradise was lost.

The lazy wind swept days of Sun, Sea and Salt simply ended.

We crossed the boarder into South Africa in May 1975.

For twenty years I never went back.

I really had nothing to go back to.

The best part of this true story is that this historical event in my Life shaped me into a woman of substance.

Worked hard, raised my beautiful son and made sure that the World was my Country.

Travelled and studied with the deliberate intention of chasing miracles.

To live without frontiers is a beautiful thing !

FRESH. RELEVANT. INFORMED

In the World that we live in today adaptability is a much desired leadership quality.

Embracing diversity is a super power.

Sustainability is a fundamental form of governance.

The truth is that I never lost paradise because it stayed inside of me.

I just became a bigger and better citizen of the World.

Portugal is still part of my lineage and my culture except that because of an historical event I became cosmopolitan.
